Fireplace Facelift

What's better than cuddling up all warm and cozy next to the fire on a cold February night? Well, if your fireplace is an eyesore, then your moment of relaxation can be a real buzz kill. Check out the facelift I gave this tired old fireplace in my own home. The facia got some custom staggered stone, a beautifully refinish mantle, and a new tile base. It went from gaudy and gold to modern and mature.

Last fall, we re-tiled our entryway with matching tile from our kitchen. I worked the same tile into the base of the fireplace. Over the holidays, we replaced the carpet in our home with new solid wood floors. Everything turned out so well, that we couldn't just leave our sad, gold-framed fireplace as the eye-sore of the room. It really is the focal point on this floor of our home, so it needed a facelift.

I started off by wiring for surround sound, reinforced the wall so that we could mount a flat screen TV and hid all the wires. I found a great stacked stone that tied in all the colors of our decor. It's got cool grays mixed with warm tans - really nice looking. I installed the tile floor to ceiling after removing the gold framing. Doing this helped to make it seem taller in the standard height room. The best feature of the whole project was a piece of solid, reclaimed wood I had milled. I sealed it and gave it a natural finish. It turned out amazing as the mantle and really brings the warm wood colors in from the flooring. Overall, it looks like a custom built fireplace and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
